What is Community Base?

Community Base is a charity providing a home for community and voluntary groups in Brighton and Hove and services to the local community. We use income from our services, including the provision of office space and the use of our South Wing meeting rooms, to repay a mortgage on our accessible seven floor building a few minutes from Brighton station and meet our running costs.

Real help for real people

The friendly, supportive environment provided by Community Base helps a wide range of charities and community groups work together, share their expertise and provide much needed services to the local community and beyond. Thousands of people get real help from groups at Community Base every year.

A multicultural community

Community Base is a truly multicultural community centre, providing a home to groups offering help to local black and minority ethnic communities alongside groups providing services to the wider community. Groups at Community Base provide help and support to a wide range of communities locally, throughout the UK and abroad.

Our reception

Our reception team greet visitors to Community Base and deal with hundreds of enquiries about local community services every month. Here you can pick up leaflets, local newsletters or a free copy of our poster guide to local community services or browse folders with details of local volunteering and community job opportunities.

Our values

Community Base’s activities are guided by our core values which include a commitment to ensuring the existence of a strong, independent and diverse community and voluntary sector as an essential element of a democratic society.

Governance & management

Community Base is a registered charity (1052456) and a company limited by guarantee (3121688) with no share capital governed by a memorandum and articles of association. The membership of Community Base is composed of charities and other not-for-profit, non-governmental organisations that use Community Base services.

Our finances

Community Base uses income from rent, service charges and advertising on its north wall to repay a mortgage on the building we own and meet our running costs. Brighton and Hove City Council shows its support for Community Base by giving us 85% discretionary rate relief.
